Arab and Islamic Civilizations

Arab and Islamic Civilizations is an invaluable collection of over 600 images selected from 7 manuscripts in the rare book holdings of the National Library of Egypt.  In 2002, as the result of the first cooperation between UNESCO's Cairo Office, CultNat and the National Library of Egypt, efforts were made to document and publish the scientific Arabic and Islamic manuscripts that are part of the heritage in the fields of sciences and mathematics in the region.  The selected images included in this collection are specifically related to medical sciences.

Global Memory Net and Dr. Ching-chih Chen are grateful to Dr. Tarek G. Shawki, CI Advisor for Arab States of UNESCO Cairo Office in 2002, and currently Section Chief of the ICT in Education, Science and Culture of the Information Society Division, Communication and Information sector of UNESCO, Paris, for his collaboration and permission to use these images and provision of the associated descriptive information. We also acknowledge his permission to permit us to restructure the descriptive metadata to our format for the use of the GMNet's i-M-C-S retrieval system.
