  • Profs. Pero Baglioni of University of Florence and Ching-chih Chen were the invited speakers at the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, November 30, 2012.  Their topic was "New Products and Materials for Conversation and Maintenance of Cultural Heritage," and their talk was hosted by the Conservation and Preservation Division of the National Palace Museum.  National Palace Museum Educational Activity Announcement.

  • Prof. Ching-chih Chen was on a day-long consulting trip to National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung, Taiwan, November 27, 2012.  She also demonstrated the great potential of the Museum's collection for universal access using a test collection on Global Memory Net (GMNet) of the Museum's own data using the GMNet's multimedia and multilingual system.

  • Professor Chen was the invited speaker at the UCD, Dublin, Ireland on May 21, 2012.  The title of her talk was "World Heritage is Only One Click Away! Have We Fuly Explored the Potentials of New Media and Technology."   • Professor Chen was the invited Plenary Speaker for "New Media, Culture and Technology," on August 19, 2011 at The First Young Investigator Conference: "Leadership, Innovation, Growth" of the EITC (Emerging Information & Technology Conference) at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.  Her talk is entitled "World Culture and Heritage is One-Click Away! Have We Fully Explored the Potentials of New Media and Technology?" Professor Chen also moderated the closing session of the EITC Meeting.

  • World Heritage Memory Net (WHMNet) (http://whmnet.org) was officially launched with the URL of  http://whmnet.org  for public use on April 29, 2011, see the UNESCO/WHC official News for English version at: http://whc.unesco.org/en/news/740 or French version at:   http://whc.unesco.org/fr/actualites/740.  This mega partnership project with UNESCO/World Heritge Center provides instant access to multimedia and multilingual knowledge base of 911 world heritage properties of 151 countries using the much modified and expanded multimedia and multilingual system of Global Memory Net which was launched in 2007 and has a new interface recently.


  •  NTHU Memory Net (http://memorynet.nthu.edu.tw) was officially launched at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) with the URL of  http://memorynet.nthu.edu.tw  for public use on April 23, 2011 in celebration of NTHU's Centennial.  NTHU Memory Net has been directed by Prof. Ching-chih Chen in collaboration with NTHU.  It utilizes the multimedia and multilingual system used for World Heritage Memory Net, a knowledge base of 911 world heritage properties of 151 countries using the much modified and expanded multimedia and multilingual system of Global Memory Net which was launched in 2007 and has a new interface recently.


  • Professor Chen delivered an invited speech on April 22nd, 2011 as part of her “World Cultural Heritage Is One Click Away” Lecture Series at the National Central Library, Taipei, Taiwan.   • Professor Chen gave an invited talk entitled "World Heritage Memory Net and its System's Potential for Taiwan's Indigenous Cultural Heritage," when she visited the San-di-men Cultural Park of the National Council of Indigenous Populations of Taiwan in Pingtong, Taiwan on April 16, 2011.

  • Professor Chen was a keynote speaker at the International Conference of Digital Archives and Digital Humanities 2010, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. The title of her November 30, 2010 keynote speech was “The Integration of Technology, Content and Use in Digital Humanities: A new digital model for exploring our amazing world, history, and culture.”

  • Professor Chen delivered an invited speech on November 29, 2010 at the Council of Indigenous Peoples of the Republic of Taiwan, Taipei. Her talk was entitled “World heritage is one click away: Potentials for Taiwan’s indigenous culture and heritage.”

  • As part of her Honorary Chair Professorship activities in connection with her work on the NTHU Memory Net, Professor Chen gave several talks on the system and features of Global Memory Net and World Heritage Memory Net at the National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan on November 20, 2010.

  • Professor Chen delivered a keynote speech entitled “Opportunities are everywhere! Do you see them?” at the New England Taiwan Association of University Alumni Presidents Meeting, Suffolk University Law School on September 25, 2010.

  • Professor Chen delivered an invited speech on July 5, 2010 as part of her “World Cultural Heritage Is One Click Away” Lecture Series at the National Central Library, Taipei, Taiwan. The title of her talk was “World heritage is one click away, so can and must your treasure!”

  • As part of her Lecture Series entitled “World Cultural Heritage Is One Click Away,” Professor Chen delivered a keynote speech at the Annual Conference of the International Relations Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), Washington DC. Her June 26, 2010 keynote was entitled “New challenges of academic libraries in the information age: How to not just survive but thrive in the digital age!”

  • The US Department of State invited Professor Chen to deliver a solo Digital Video Conference (DVC) with the US Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on June 9, 2010. Her DVC presentation was entitled "New Challenges of Public Libraries in the Information Age: How to not just survive but thrive in the digital age!”

  • Professor Chen delivered an invited speech entitled “World cultural heritage is one click away, so can world agricultural heritage,” in the same Lecture Series at the National Agricultural Library, Silver Spring, MD on March 26, 2010.

  • Professor Chen delivered an invited speech on March 12, 2010 entitled “Technology enabling and universal access to world heritage: Challenges and potentials,” in the same Lecture Series at the National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

  • Professor Chen was the keynote speaker at the International Conference on Arts Venue Planning and Management, Kaohsiung, Taiwan on November 9, 2009. Her talk was entitled “Cultural Heritage and Digital Libraries: The world and universal access.”

  • Professor Chen was the keynote speaker on August 7, 2009 at the 9th Emerging Information & Technology Conference: Advancing Technology Innovations through Collaboration, MIT, Cambridge, MA, August 6-7, 2009.   • Professor Chen delivered an invited talk , “World Heritage Memory Net: Instant Access to 145 Countries’ 878 World Heritage Sites with Cutting-edge Technologies,” at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Library, Beijing, China, on July 21, 2009.

  • Professor Ching-chih Chen was the keynote speaker in Hanoi, Vietnam at the 14th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians on April 21, 2009, speaking about World Heritage Memory Net to an audience of more than 900 participants from 27 countries.

  • As the honored guest speaker, Professor Chen spoke about World Heritage Memory Net on April 17, 2009 at the Annual Meeting of the Simmons Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, International Honor Society, Simmons College, Boston, MA.

  • Professor Chen gave a presentation about World Heritage Memory Net at UNESCO’s World Heritage Center Headquarters, Paris, France on February 9, 2009.

  • The University of Washington hosted Professor Chen as the special invited speaker at their Symposium on CNKI Standards and Chinese e-Publishing Agenda in Seattle, WA, July 19, 2008.

  • Professor Ching-chih Chen gave the keynote speech entitled “Digital Libraries as Instant Knowledge Bases: The Experience of Global Memory Net” at ICIKM 2008 (International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management) in Kathmandu, Nepal, March 26 and 28, 2008. Conference Announcement.

  • World Heritage Memory Net Is Coming Soon! The World Heritage Memory Net was featured at the "News and Events" of UNESCO's World Heritage Center. In November 2006, the World Heritage Center signed a multi-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, to establish the first World Heritage Digital Center (WHDC) under the leadership of Dr. Ching-chih Chen. "The World Heritage Center considers this an important project with great potential to enhance the humanities for universal access and enrichment through the use of emerging technologies," commented Francesco Bandarin, Director of the Centrer. It will greatly promote a better knowledge of World Heritage properties and increase awareness of everyone's duty to protect them. Click for English Version or French Version of the news.   • Chen to Keynote in Riga in November.  Twelve years after her NIT Conference in Riga in 1995, Prof. Chen will return to Riga, Latvia and deliver a keynote speech on November 19, 2007 at the Digital Libraries for Learning Conference, Riga, Latvia (organized by the National Library of Latvia.) Her talk will be “How Digital Libraries Can Bring the World’s Treasures and Heritage to the End-Useers Instantly!”

  • Chen to Speak at the  ICUDL Meeting in Pittsburgh.  On November 4, 2007, Prof. Chen will deliver an invited speech at The 3rd International Conference on Universal Digital Library, Pittsburgh.  She will speak on “From Global Memory Net to World Heritage Memory Net: New Partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Center.”

  • Chen Moves to Africa in August.  Prof. Chen will give three papers at three major Divisional Meetings of the Art Libraries Division, the Resource Sharing and ILL Division and the Government Libraries Division at the the 73rd Annual Meeting of the International Federation of Library Institutions (IFLA 73) in Durban, South Africa on August 20, 2007.  Then, as special guest, she will be the sole invited key speaker at the two-day Leadership Workshop in Mbabane, Swaziland on August 27-28, 2007, jointly organized by the American Embassies of South African and Swaziland.


  • Chen to Speak in Taiwan Again.   Prof. Chen will deliver an invited speech at the 2007 International Conference of National Digital Archives Program (NDAP): Sustainability and Management of Digital Archives in the Time of Global Collaboration, Taipei, Taiwan, July 23, 2007.  She will speak on “International Collaborative Activities and Experience of Global Memory Net and World Heritage Memorial Net.”

  • Chen Moves Her Activities to Mexico in June.  Prof. Chen will delivered invited speeches at the Humanities School, University of Saint Luis Potosi, Mexico, June 25, 2007, and at the the Humanities Council, Saint Luis Potosi, Mexico, June 29, 2007.  Then she will  be visiting two World Heritage Sites near Saint Luis Potosi -- Sierra Gorda as guest of the three majors and heritage leaders there as well as Gerataro as guest of the Ministry of Culture of Gerataro.


  • The UNESCO's World Heritage Center featured World Heritage Memory Net at its News and Events on May 3, 2007.   • Dr. Chen will deliver her keynote lecture to the faculty group interested specifically in Middle Eastern and Asian Studies, organized by the National Institute of Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) in Chcago on April 27, 2007.  Prof. Chen will articulate the potentials of Global Memory Net as invaluable digital media resources for teaching global area studies.

  • Prof. Chen delivered an invited talk on Global Memory Net at the Digital Library for the Maghred Workshop, Rabat, Morocco, January 26, 2007. The Meeting was organized by the Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology. Dr. Chen also shared with the participants about the potentials of World Heritage Digital Library.

  • Chen to Keynote at Digital Library in Morocco.  Prof. Chen will deliver a keynote speech entitled "Challenges for Developing A Global Digital Library and Gateway: From Global Memory Net to World Heritage Digital Library," at he Digital Library for the Maghred Workshop, Rabat, Morocco, January 25-27, 2007.

  • Chen to Keynote in Hong Kong.  Prof. Chen will deliver a keynote speech at the 7th Annual Hong Kong Innovative Users Group Meeting in Hong Kong on December 11, 2006. Her speech will be "Advancing Digital Collaboration: The Case of Global Memory Net."

  • At the first US-China Workshop in Neutron Scattering Science and Technology, Beijing, Prof. Chen presented a banquet speech on Global Memory Net on November 14, 2006 to a crowded Chinese and international participants.

  • Prof. Chen was the keynote speaker presenting the Global Memory Net at the Russian Conference on Digital Libraries (RCDL), Suzdal, Russia, October 17, 2006. Global Memory Net was also featured in another invited speech presented by Chen's Italian collaborators from University of Florence on how nanoscience is used to conserve cultural heritage as demonstrated in the collection of Project Restore in GMNet.

  • Chen to Keynote at RCDL in Suzdal, Russia.  Prof. Chen will deliver a keynote speech at the Russian Conference on Digital Libraries (RCDL), Suzdal, Russia, October 17, 2006. She will use Global Memory Net as a case to speak on "The Reality of Global Digital Library for Universal Access."  She will also deliver a joint paper with her Italian collaborators on "Nanoscience for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and the Emergence of a Powerful Digital Image Collection."

  • Dr. Chen co-chairs with Jose Borbinha the Panel on Sustained Digital Libraries for Universal Use at the European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL), Alicante, Spain on September 20, 2006

  • Dr. Chen was the Opening Speaker at the XI International Seminar Forum UNESCO, University and Heritage: Documentation for Conservation and Development, New Strategies for the Future, Florence, Italy on September 11, 2006. She presented Global Memory Net, and advocated how the its i-M-C-S system can provide an effective documentation tools for managing the cultural heritage for conservation of archaeology, historical center, museums and archives. Her talk was translated to French, Italian, and Spanish in addition to English.

  • Chen to Keynote and Speak in Italy and Spain. Prof. Chen will deliver an opening keynote speech at XI International Seminar Forum UNESCO, University and Heritage: Documentation for Conservation and Development, New Strategies for the Future, Florence, Italy, on September 11, 2006. Then she will organize a sectional meeting at the European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL), Alicante, Spain on September 20, 2007. 

  • Prof. Chen was an invited speaker who presented Global Memory Net to participants of the joint Korea-Japan's 7th Core University Program Seminar on NGI in Daejeon, Korea. She discussed how Global Memory Net uses Web as a platform in developing Sseamlessly integrated world digital library.

  • At the 72nd IFLA in Seoul, Korea, Dr. Chen presented two major talks on Global Memory Net at the IFLA/Information Technology with Audiovisual and Multimedia and National Libraries Section, and the IFLA/Rare Book and Manuscript Section. Global Memory Net was also discussed by her collaborator, Prof. Takashi Nagatsuka at his joint paper with Yuka Egusa at the FLA/Information Technology with Audiovisual and Multimedia and National Libraries Section.

  • Speaking Activities in Korea in August 2006.  Prof. Chen will be giving three talks at the 72nd IFLA General Conference and Council, "Libraries: Dynamic Engines for the Knowledge and Information Society," Seoul, Korea, August 20-24, 2006.  Then she will be an invited speaker at the 7th Korea-Japan Core University Program Seminar on NGI, Chungnam University, Daejeon, Korea.

  • A Memorandum of Agreement has been signed in July 2006 between the National Central Library, Taiwan and Global Memory Net so that selective images of Taiwan Memory will be included soon.  National Central Library currently has extensive activities related to the creation and dissemination of digital resources under the major National Digital Archives Program.

  • Prof. Ching-chih Chen was an invited speaker to speak at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo on July 14, 2006.   Her visit was hoted by Prof. Noriko Kando.

  • Prof. Chen to speak to the National Institute of Informatics group in Tokyo, Japan on July 14, 2006.  She will speak on "using Web as a Platform in Developing Seamlessly Integrated World Digital Library for Global Use: The Challenges of Global Memory Net."

  • Dr. Ching-chih Chen received her LITA/OCLC Kilgour Award at the LITA President's Program Award Reception in New Orleans on June 25, 2006.   She was also honored at the OCLC President's Luncheon on June 26, 2006. The Kilgour Award Committee acknowledges "the important work and contribution of Ching-chih Chen, whose research has led to significant achivements in the areas of global digital libraries, global information infrastructure, and information management."   • Professor Ching-chih Chen and Boris Badurina of the University of Osijek offered the first workshop on developing visual digital libraires to Croatian librarians, archivists and museum curators in Zadar Croatia on June 6-7, 2006, sponsored jointly by University of Zadar and University of Osijek.

  • Prof. Ching-chih Chen was an invited speaker to the National and University Library, Zagreb, Croatia , May 29, 2006, sponsored by the Society of Information and Documentation of Croatia.  Her talk entitled "Conceptualizing Interactive Dynamic Multimedia Information Provision and Access: The Cse of Global Memory Net." Then, she was an invited speaker at LIDA Conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, May 31, 2006, where she spoke on the "Challeges for Developing a World Digital Library and Gateway."



  • Global Memory Net has its first new brochure with considerable useful information on the features of its innovative integrated multimedia content retrieval system (i-M-C-S).  It provides graphic examples on its random access with content-based retrieval capability, zooming functionality with dynamic digital watermark, and multimedia access from associated metadata information.  It also highlight its multi-collection, multilingual, and geographical retrieval capabilities as well as integrated link to search the world information resources.

  • Prof. Ching-chih Chen delivered her invited speech, "Using Web as a Platform in Developing Seamlessly Integrated World Digital Library for Global Use: The Case of Global Memory Net," at the Lecture Series of the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Nankang, Taiwan on May 23rd, 2006.

  • Prof. Ching-chih Chen was the keynote speaker at the Annual Meeting of Library Directors of Universities and Colleges in Tainan, Taiwan, May 19-20, 2006.  She adovocated the potential for international collaboration in this digital age in her talk, "New Digital Library Perspectives from International Library and Information Point of View: The Case of Global Memory Net."  The meeting was hosted by Southern Taiwan Technical University.

  • Chen to Be Keynote speaker at LIDA (Library in the Digital Age) Meeting, Dubrovnik, Croatia again on May 31, 2006.  She will speak on the "Challenges for Developing a World Digital Library and Gateway: The Case of Global Memory Net."  In addition, she will speak in Zagreb at the National Library to the Croatian Society for Information Science group, as well as offering a Workshop on Digital Libraries after the LIDA conference in Zadah, Croatia.

  • Dr. Ching-chih Chen is the winner of the Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology for 2006. OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, Inc.) and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association, sponsor the award. "The award is given to a person who has amassed a significant body of research in the field of library and information technology. Particular recognition is given to research which results in a positive and substantive impact on the publication, storage, retrieval and dissemination of informaiton." The Kilgour Award Committee acknowledges "the important work and contribution of Ching-chih Chen, whose research has led to significant achivements in the areas of global digital libraries, global information infrastructure, and information management." Her work in Global Memory Net and the development of the innovative integrated multimedia content retrieval system (i-M-C-S) are specifically cited.   • Professor Ching-chih Chen gave an invited talk entitled "Global Memory Net and univeral access: Its latest development and potential for collaboration and E/T" at the UNESCO's headquarter, Paris on March 17, 2006 to the staff of the
    Division of Communication and Information, as well as those interested from several other divisions. The talk was hosted by Dr. Abdelaziz Abid, Senior Programme Specialist in charge of Memory of the World Program.  

  • On February 8, 2006, UNESCO Communication and Information "News" announced the launching of Global Memory Net. It also announced that the much of the collections of the UNESCO's Memory of the World collection is included in Global Memory Net for universal access via GMNet's i-M-C-S system.   • Dr. Ching-chih Chen delivered the Opening Keynote Speech delivered at the 8th International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL 2005), Bangkok, Thailand, in celebration of the 50th Birthday of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the Patron of the Thai Library Association.  Her speech entitled "Thai's Invaluable Memory Celebrated Via Global Memory Net" was attended by H.R.H. Princess.   • Prof. Chen will be the keynote speaker at the 7th International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL 2005), Bangkok, Thailand, December 12-15, 2005.  Her talk, entitled "Thai's Invaluable Memory Celebrated via Global Memory Net," will include a unique collection of rare pictures of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn from birth to the present, as well as those highlighting some of her recent memorable events and activities. This collection, as a part of Thai Memory, is presented in Celebration of the 50th Birthday of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the Patron of Thai Library Association.

  • Dr. Ching-chih Chen chairs a session entitled "Content-based and object-specific image retrieval techniques for museum images" at the MCN@Boston: Digit Fugit! Preserving Knowledge Into the Future, Boston, MA on November 4, 2005.  At this session, Dr. Chen and her two collaborators spoke on their joint project funded by NSF, International Collaboration to Advance User-oriented Technologies for Managing and distributing Images in Digital Libraries," NSF/IIS-0333036 (PI: Ching-chih Chen, Co-PIs: James Z. Wang and Jianbo Shi, September 2004-August 2007).

  • On October 26, 2005 OCLC announced that Ching-chih Chen, the PI of Global Memory Net, has joined OCLC Online Computer Library Center as Consultant to the President for global digital initiatives among libraries, museums and archival institutions.   • More of the first group of visiting researchers will leave for home soon. We will bid good bye to Nguyen Thi Tuan Linh and Nguyen Thanh Son from Vietnam National Ethnological Museum (VNTM), Hanoi, Vietnam on October 31, 2005. They have developed a multimedia database on the 54 minority ethnic groups in Vietnam with images contributed by VME.

    Haiyan (Haley) Li from Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) will leave on Nov. 5th, who has developed a multimedia database on Chinese musical instruments as the first collection of the major world musical instruments.

    Boris Badurina from Osijek, Croatia will return to his teaching position at the University J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek on Nov. 6, 2005. In addition to his contribution to the Global Memory Net with selected collections of the Museum of Osijek, he has been the key technologist in our development of the latest versions (Versions 3.0 and 4.0) of the Integrated Multimedia Content System (i-M-C-S) of Global Memory Net. i-M-C-S is a multilingual, multiformat, and multimedia system with powerful searching capabilities.

    Zhang Hongjia (Jenny Zhang) from University of Hainan, China will return on Nov. 15, 2005. Jenny has developed a rich image database on the culture of "Li" minority ethnic group, as well as been involved with the developed of several other GMNet multimedia databases.

    Xiaobo Xiao from Xian Jiaotong Unuiversity Library will return at the end of November. In addition to the preparation of image databases related to artifacts in and around Xian, he has also been involved in system development work with Version 4.0 of i-M-C-S.

    Under the supervision of Dr. Chen, the contributions from these visiting researchers have been substantial, and we want to thank them all and wish them well in their endeavors! The experience and "memory" of the short visit will also be invaluable to all of us.

  • Mission accomplished! GMNet bid good-bye to Shengqiang Zhang who left for home in Chengdu, Sichuan, China after almost 5-month stay to assume an enlarged responsibility as the Head of Library Automation at Sichuan University. During his productive period at Simmons, he extended the Version 1.0 of GMNet's system functionalities to a completed Version 2 with fully integratrated Linus/Apache/PHP-based system with dynamic management components under Prof. Chen's guidance. We thank him for his contribution and a job well done!

  • GMNet team visited the Capital during August 24-28, 2005. Much thanks to the great hospitality and thoughtful arrangement of Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, Chief of Asian Division of the Library of Congress; and Director Peter Young of the National Agricultural Library, the group tours extensively the two national libraries, and had also plenty opportunities for information exchange. We also thank Ms. Jiwon Kim of National Library of Medicine for her introduction to the NLM's Historical Collection. In addition, they also capitalized the opportunity to get to know many historical sites and some of the rich collections of Smithsonian museums in the Washington DC area. This trip will leave them with much treasured memories for a long time!

  • GMNet welcome their latest visiting researcher, Xiaobo Xiao from Xian, China, who arrived on August 17, 2005. Xiaobo is the Vice-Head of Library Automation at the Xian Jiaotong Unuiversity Library. He is also a Ph.D. candidate in computer science of that university. He will be at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College for 3 months under the support of the US National Science Foundation participating in further system development and exploring the possibilities of integrating selective image contents related to the culture of Xian as a part of Global Memory Net under Prof. Ching-chih Chen.

  • GMNet team welcome the visit of several staff members of the Asia Division of Library Congress -- Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, Chief of Asian Division, Dr. Mi Chu Wiens, Head of Scholarly Services and Mr. Tien Doan, System Staff of the Division on August 8-9, 2005. Currently, Global Memory Net's Naxi Manuscripts is collaborative project with Dr. Lee using both the unique Naxi collection and metadata from the LC's Asia Division, and the GMNet's technologies. Further collaborative possibilities will be explored in the two-day meeting with the GMNet team at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College.

  • GMNet welcome their latest visiting researchers, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuan Linh and Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son from Hanoi, Vietnam, who arrived on August 3, 2005. Linh is the Conservator at the Vietnam National Ethnological Museum (VNTM), Hanoi, Vietnam, and Son is an AV technical staff at the same museum. They are at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College for 3 months under the support of the US National Science Foundation and Ford Foundation exploring the inclusion of selective VNEM's image s as a part of Global Memory Net's collection under Prof. Ching-chih Chen.

  • During July 27-30, 2005, Prof. Chen delivered the invited speeches, entitled "Digital Libraries and Universal Access: What Global Memory Net hopes to achieve?" at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (July 27), Institue of Scientific and Technological Documentation Center (July 28), National Library of China (July 29), and Palace Museum (July 30th) during her whirlwind week-long trip to Beijing, China.   • Our latest visiting researcher, Boris Badurina from Osijek, Croatia, arrived on July 6, 2005. Boris is a member of the Department of Information Sciences, University J. J. Strossmayer in Osijek, Croatia, where he teaches courses in databases, digitization and web development. He will be at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College for 4 months under the support of the US National Science Foundation working in integrating selective image contents from the Museum of Osijek as a part of Global Memory Net's collection under Prof. Ching-chih Chen.

  • Prof. Chen delivered an invited speech, entitled "New mode of universal access and Global Memory Net" at the International Conference on Universal Digital Libraries, Hangzhou, China, on November 1st, 2005. At the same meeting, Mr. Shengqiang Zhang, Head of Library Automation of Sichuwan University also gave a talk on his R&D work related to system development (v. 2.0) for Global Memory Net.   • National Science Foundation has granted the second-year support to Global Memory Net's R&D project, "International Collaboration to Advance User-oriented Technologies for Managing and Distributing Images in Digital Libraries." The two-year grant will enable the PI, Prof. Ching-chih Chen of Simmons College, to collaborate closely with the co-PIs, Prof. James Z. Wang of the Pennsylvania State University and Prof. Jian-bo Shi of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as collaborator in Taiwan, Prof. V. W. Soo of the National Taiwan University in continuing their advance digital imaging R&D. While Chen's group will continue to explore the image collection and metadata development and retrieval issues, Wang's team will concentrate on content-based image retrieval and progressive displaying of copyright-protected images R&D, Shi's team will focus on object-specific image retrieval activities, and Soo's team will continue its text- and ontology-based retrieval of images.

  • Global Memory Net welcomes Visiting Researcher, Mr. Zhang Sheng Qiang, from Sichuwan University, Chengdu, China. Mr. Zhang is the Head of Library Automation of the Sichuwan University Library. He has joined Global Memory Net for 5 months from April to September 2005, mostly under the support of the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and NSF/IDLP. In addition to explore the possibilites of Sichuwan University Library becoming a contributing collaborator, Mr. Zhang also concentrates his time in developing a workable dynamic PHP-based new version of the GMNet's web-based system together with additional search capabities such as sound, bilingual, and multi-database retrievals.

  • Tsurumi University's Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, Yokohama, Japan is one of Global Memory Net's latest collaborators. The University's selected collection of the rare Waka poems and tales and selected ancient western maps of Japan becomes one of the latest prototype collections of Global Memory Net. While using our technology and metadata structure, Prof. Takashi Nagatsuka led the team at Tsurumi University in providing the descriptions of this collection in English and Chinese, as well as the sound files.

  • Chen will be a feature speaker at The 3rd China-US Library Conference, Shanghai, China, March 22-25, 2005.  She will speak on "Digital Libraries and Universal Access in the 21st Century: Realities and Potential for US China Collaboration."

  • Global Memory Net's latest project is supported by a NSF/IDLP grant entitled International Collaboration to Advance Useer-oriented Technologies for Managing and Distributing Images in Digital Libraries. The two-year grant will enable the PI, Prof. Ching-chih Chen of Simmons College, to collaborate closely with the co-PIs, Prof. James Z.   • The exciting and rare Naxi Manuscripts has become available through the Global Memory Net. It is a collaborative project between Dr. Hwa-wei Lee, Head of the Asian Division of the US Library of Congress (LC) and Prof. Ching-chih Chen of Simmons College, Boston. This Naxi collection is the largest one outside of China and is unrivaled in quality, quantity, and variety among Naxi collections in Europe, the People's Republic of China, and Taiwan. The Library of Congress collection consists of 3,342 Naxi manuscripts features ceremonial writings of the Naxi people of Yunnan Province, China. Some of the most illustrative images are included in Global Memory Net.

  • Chen to  be a Keynote Speaker at Libraries in the Digital Age, Dubrovnik and Mljet Island, Croatia, May 25-29, 2004.  She will speak on "The Promise of International Digital Library Collaboration for Innovative Use of Invaluable Resources."

  • Prof. Piero Baglioni of the Center for Colloid and Interface Science (CSGI) of the University of Florence is collaborating with Prof. Ching-chih Chen on Project Restore. They are developing a multimedia digital library on the world's treasured cultural and heritage works of art degraded over time or by fire, water, etc., but restored by the CSGI's nanoparticle technology. Prof. Baglioni is the world's leading scientist on this method. His multimedia collection on the pre- and post-restoration of these art objects will be of great value to researchers, educators, conservation specialists as well as students all over the world.
